Tokyo International Airport, also known as Haneda Airport, is located approximately nine miles from central Tokyo and serves millions of passengers each year. In 2019, the airport was ranked fifth worldwide in terms of passenger traffic, according to the Airport Traffic Report from the New York and New Jersey Port Authority.

With the volume of passengers using the airport's services each year, the security team aimed to shorten wait times and maintain security within the facility.

To accomplish this goal, the Tokyo International Airport is implementing screening technology from Smiths Detection. Airport security will install carry-on baggage screening systems, automatic tray return systems and UV-C tray disinfection technology to decrease wait times without compromising security.

The scanners electronics and liquids to remain in bags, speeding up passenger screening and reducing touchpoints. The UV-C, an ultraviolet light tray disinfection kit helps to eliminate microorganisms, including coronaviruses, helping to protect passengers and staff from tactile transmission of contagious diseases.
