Oktoberfest Ride Strikes, Kills Security Guard
Aleksandar Spasic, 52, died after being struck by a moving ride at Oktoberfest.
Spasic was working as a security guard at the renowned beer festival in Munich, Germany, when a descending carriage of the “Hangover” ride collided with him around 9:50 p.m. on Monday. Emergency crews attempted CPR, revived him, and continued resuscitation efforts as he was transported to the hospital. Tragically, Spasic passed away shortly after.
While it is uncertain how fast the ride was traveling when Spasic was hit, the “Hangover” has a maximum fall speed of 56 mph.
The incident occurred just 10 prior to the end of his shift.
It is unclear why Spasic was in the vicinity of the ride's pathway. Spasic's wife, Adrijana, and their son, Lazar, assert Spasic was safety-concious and didn't make a habit of placing himself in danger.
“Just the day before, he was working at another ride when a visitor lost something,” Lazar recounted. “My dad was asked to retrieve it, but he refused because it was too dangerous.” Still, Lazar believes it is possible his father may have entered the restricted area to help a visitor. Yet, there is no official confirmation at this time.
Law enforcement is investigating the circumstances surrounding Spasic's death. Spokesperson Thomas Schelshorn says they are looking to determine “whether someone can be held responsible.”
