Following a tragic spring death related to an iPhone robbery on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) platform stairway, after several so-called “flash mob” attacks on or around stations, and linked to a new Chicago mayor, CTA President Forrest Claypool said in mid-June that he plans to double the number of security cameras across the rail system, while also working with police to enhance security for passengers. Under the plan, Chicago police will deploy teams, called Wolfpacks, as well as plainclothes officers to patrol the system.
“Observe and report” security officers have gained popularity with private security firms over the past five years. These officers, when faced with danger or a need for physical intervention, are supposed to radio the police or authorities trained to handle dangerous situations. They do not intervene.
Security Officers may be some of the most difficult employees to motivate. Many, by their own admission are either finishing out their careers, waiting for a better opportunity, or just plain lazy.
“Humans are not biologically wired to work at night. Speed and accuracy on the job are only above average between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.,” says a report on the effects of fatigue and night work on human cognitive performance.
