Resolution introduced to designate July 20 as National Heroes Day
A new resolution introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Colorado Congressmen Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) and Jason Crow (D-CO) designates July 20th as “National Heroes Day” to honor the sacrifices of everyday heroes.
The July 20th date is meant to commemorate the theater shooting which took place on July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colo. in which 12 lives were taken, seventy were wounded and hundreds suffered emotional trauma. Specifically, the resolution was inspired by four men whose lives were taken while shielding others on July 20, 2012: Jonathan Blunk (26); John Larimer (27); Matt McQuinn (27); and Alex Teves (24).The tragedy brought to light incredible heroism by those who sacrificed themselves to save others, those who carried the wounded to safety, and those first responders and medical teams whose tireless efforts saved lives, says a release. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to illustrate the everyday heroes whose acts of kindness and bravery are helping communities during this time, the release says.
“These men are four examples of the countless other individuals demonstrating courage, initiative and bravery and stepping up for their communities every day. This is particularly visible during the coronavirus pandemic where we have seen tremendous acts of selflessness and heroism by so many,” said Rep. Ed Perlmutter. “During trying times it’s important to remember the heroes among us who answer the call to save lives and set a shining example for generations to come. That’s what this resolution is all about – recognizing fellow citizens for their heroic actions in a time of need.”
According to the release, everyday heroes during the COVID-19 health crisis include but are not limited to: medical professionals; law enforcement, emergency responders and the National Guard; frontline workers and essential personnel such as truck drivers, letter carriers, delivery workers and food and grocery workers; teachers; journalists; small business and community leaders; and thousands of individuals who have lost family, friends and loved ones to the pandemic.
