There is no place to hide in one St. Louis, Mo., area school system for employees who are arrested in incidents unrelated to the school facilities. The Hazelwood School Board subscribes to a law enforcement database service, which alerts school officials when employees are arrested for certain crimes. The database, Regional Justice Informational System, costs about 25 cents per employee per month. Schools are more sensitive today to employee behavior seeping into the schools, especially when it comes to sexually-related crimes. In most states, background checks are a mandatory part of the hiring process.
