8 Million Records Allegedly Stolen by AI Hacking Group

Law enforcement apprehended seven suspects in connection with a cybercrime ring, in which cybercriminals leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) in hacking efforts. Since September last year, the suspects allegedly stole more than 8 million records from 90 entities, including businesses, hospitals, and private academies, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
The use of AI is suspected in incidents targeting 60 of the victims, with some involving extortion. 38 targets experienced losses, as the group demanded a total of 360 million won (or $272,000) from victims.
The leader of the group reportedly taught himself hacking skills while working at a security company. At this company, the suspect was responsible for simulated hacking incidents.
South Korean authorities remain on alert for cybercriminal activity, especially after the nation’s financial sector faced a series of high-profile, AI-driven cyberattacks.
