Pennsylvania’s South Williamsport Area School District (SWASD) has announced it is deploying ZeroEyes, an AI-based gun detection and intelligent situational awareness software. By adopting this technology, the district aims to improve security for students, faculty, and staff by proactively identifying firearms and informing first responders.
SWASD is located in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, serving 1,190 students and 120 staff. Central Elementary, Rommelt Elementary and South Williamsport Jr./Sr. High Schools make up the district. Additionally, SWASD has a K-12 cyber school called Mountie Academy.
According to the ZeroEyes Gun Violence Research Center, 35.9% of analyzed shootings in Pennsylvania took place on K-12 campuses. In addition to adopting the new technology, SWASD also bolsters security with emergency communication tools for teachers, a sophisticated camera system, a secure visitor management system, and door buzzer and interlocking systems. The district works in collaboration with the Pennsylvania State Police to keep campus safe.
“Our decision to partner with ZeroEyes stems from our commitment to improving student safety,” said Eric Briggs, Superintendent of SWASD. “I first encountered this technology two years ago and immediately recognized its potential. Through our School Safety Focus Group meetings, which bring together legislators, state police, and other stakeholders, we identified the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) grant as an opportunity to implement this groundbreaking solution. With the support of our on-site police department, ZeroEyes ensures we can respond to a gun-related threat in seconds, providing peace of mind to everyone in our district.”
