Every autumn, a new wave of young students floods onto college campuses, eager and excited for the next phase of their lives and ready to explore their newfound freedom. They are not always eager, however, to consider safety and security a top priority.

When Kathleen Hyde talks about cybersecurity leadership, she talks about breadth. “Training is going to teach you the technical skills you need, but employers also want to see somebody who has problem-solving skills, who has good communication skills,” says Hyde, who chairs Cybersecurity Programs at Champlain College Online.

Middle and high school students feel safer with security officers and a moderate level of security camera use outside of their schools, but a greater deployment of cameras inside school buildings makes them feel less safe, according to a school climate survey of more than 54,000 students from nearly 100 schools in Maryland, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Only 29 percent of healthcare organizations reporting having a comprehensive security program in place, and among those that do not have such a program, 31 percent are either not meeting with their executive committee or are meeting less than once a year to give security updates.

According to ACI Worldwide, merchants should expect a 14-percent increase in fraud attempts between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve 2018. The value of fraud attempts is expected to increase by 17 percent.

The global cybersecurity workforce gap has increased to more than 2.9 million, according to (ISC)2. Fifty-nine percent of cybersecurity professionals say that the widening workforce gap puts their organizations at risk.

“Every once in a while I need to remind myself that security is a journey,” says Michael W. Wanik, CPP, CBCP, who is Senior Director, Corporate Security for United Therapeutics Corporation.

“The most difficult part of the job is prioritizing given the number of incidents that could occur,” says Gordon MacDonald, Senior Director, Corporate Security for Wells Fargo.

“I take a lot of lessons from the community policing model, which is policing through customer service,” says Ryan King, Manager of Safety, Security and Emergency Management for Central Florida Health (CFH).
