Three in four Britons are concerned about Internet privacy, according to a new poll from Ipsos MORI. Furthermore, 62 percent of Britons would rather keep their online activities private, even if it means that they lose out on personalized services and relevant recommendations. That puts Britain on a similar level to the United States, which countries such as France, Germany, Australia and Sweden are even less likely to say they would trade privacy for personalized services.
The FIDO Alliance has released a public draft of new security standards that could someday make user passwords obsolete, Forbes reports. The FIDO Alliance, a security-minded industry consortium that includes Google, Netflix and PayPal, is drawing the support of major tech companies looking for login alternatives with greater security, which easing the authentication burden on consumers, who must create and manage passwords and credentials for the numerous sites they visit.
Hospitals need to do a better job of encrypting patient data to address the spiraling scale of security breaches, concludes a new report from healthcare IT security company Redspin. The report also notes that healthcare organizations need to bridge the gap between the demand from doctors and nurses using their own devices in the workplace (BYOD) and enacting the necessary security measures to ensure patient information contained on those devices is protected if they are lost or stolen.
The Secret Service is urging U.S. lawmakers to do more to prevent the cyber thefts similar to those that have recently hit Target Corp and other major retailers. According to William Noonan, a top agent with the Secret Service’s cyber operations branch, “Legislative action could help to improve the nation’s cybersecurity, reduce regulatory costs on U.S. companies, and strengthen law enforcement’s ability to conduct effective investigations.”
