The new Georgia gun law that will take effect July 1 is making officials consider beefing up security at government facilities. A metal detector was placed in the front entrance of the Old Courthouse on Wright Square in Savannah, Georgia, after the law was passed.
Milton-Freewater, Ore., is the latest city to allow city employees to carry guns while on the job, according to The Union Bulletin. The City Council approved a change in the employee handbook Monday that allows properly-permitted staff to carry a firearm at work.
A divided federal appeals court struck down California’s concealed weapons rules on Tuesday, saying they violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms. By a 2-1 vote, the judge panel said California was wrong to require applicants to show good cause to receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote for the majority that “The right to bear arms includes the right to carry an operable firearm outside the home for the lawful purpose of self-defense.”
The First Florida District Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that colleges and universities have no vested or delegated authority to regulate firearms on campus – only Legislature has that authority, according to a report from The Examiner.
Seventy-eight percent of 1,649 students surveyed at 15 public colleges in the Midwest do not support concealed carry handguns on campus, and the same percentage said they would not obtain a permit to carry a handgun on campus even if it were allowed, according to The Plain Dealer.
After Illinois became the 50th state to enact concealed-carry legislation, it is now perfectly legal to carry a concealed firearm in public everywhere in the country except for Washington, D.C., with varying restrictions on who exactly is allowed to carry and where he or she can do so.
