Nine people were killed and many others injured in a shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College on Thursday. CNN reports that the shooter, a 26-year-old enrolled in the English class he initially attacked, was killed in a shootout with police.

According to Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler: “We arrived to find multiple patients in multiple classrooms. Law enforcement was on scene and had the shooter neutralized.” He told CNN that two patients died while being transported to a hospital.

ATF agents, canine teams and the FBI were either on site or en route to search for explosives, firearm casings and ammunition. Investigators are examining social media postings made by a man who they believe to be the suspect in the shootings.

The college is located about 70 miles south of Eugene, Oregon, in the small city of Roseburg. Umpqua Community College has 13,600 students, most of whom were part-time or “community education” students.
