Fall protection has once again topped the list of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) most-cited workplace-safety violations, according to a report from the Society for Human Resource Management.
The top 10 most frequently cited workplace-safety violations for fiscal year 2013 are as follows:
- Fall Protection: 8,241 violations (2012 had 7,250.)
- Hazard Communication: 6,156 violations (2012: 4,696)
- Scaffolding: 5,423 (2012: 3,814)
- Respiratory Protection: 3,879 (2012: 2,371)
- Electrical (wiring): 3,452 violations (2012: 1,744 – this was ranked as the 8th most frequently cited violation in 2012.)
- Powered Industrial Trucks: 3,340 violations (2012: 1,993 – this was ranked 7th in the 2012 report.)
- Ladders: 3,311 (2012: 2,310 – this was ranked 5th in 2012.)
- Lockout/Tagout: 3,254 (2012: 1,572 – this was ranked 9th in 2012.)
- Electrical (General): 2,745 (2012: 1,332 violations – this was ranked 10th in 2012.)
- Machine Guarding: 2,701 (2012: 2,097 – this was ranked 6th in 2012.)
While the standards being violated are not a surprise, the number of violations for all 10 of these most-cited standards has increased significantly from 2012.
