JP Morgan Chase, Walgreens, Other Hit by Major Data Breach
Customers of TiVo Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Walgreen Co. and a number of other major brands were warned over the weekend that hackers may have their e-mail addresses and some other personal information, thanks to a massive data breach at Epsilon.
The Irving, Texas-based e-mail marketing giant informed its corporate customers that hackers had accessed their e-mail records on Friday. Epsilon is part of Alliance Data Systems Corp. based in Plano, Texas.
Millions of warnings were sent to the customers of Kroger Co. TiVo, JPMorgan Chase, US Bancorp, Disney Destinations, Walgreen and Capital One Financial Corp., Marriott International Inc., Ritz-Carlton, McKinsey & Co. and Brookstone.
The companies said no detailed personal identification information or credit card details were compromised.
The hackers could use the e-mail addresses, however, to launch a “phishing” attack in which they pose as the company whose e-mail lists was hacked. The companies warned not to give personal information to anyone sending e-mail in their name.
