The Los Angeles International Airport will receive $150 million in federal dollars to increase baggage security. The airport already operates an automated baggage screening system at Terminal 3, and the system should be up and running in the next few months.

The system uses technology to screen each piece of checked baggage behind the scenes at the airport. It’s designed to make travel through LAX safer and faster by removing the explosive detection machines from the lobbies of airport terminals.

The new screening program is expected to be complete in about three years.
