Big Y, a Massachusetts grocery chain, is using smart cameras to stop “sweethearting," when a cashier passes goods to friends through such actions as obscuring the barcode or slipping items beyond the scanner. Security algorithms embedded in the stores' security video system alerts to such dishonest behavior. It alerts store management with available video images.
