US Defense Department Faces Class Action Lawsuit for Data Breach

Reuters reports that the United States Department of Defense is facing a class action lawsuit, filed after a data breach compromised sensitive, personally identifiable information for millions of current and former military.
In this breach, hackers allegedly exploited a vulnerability in a records file-sharing system, enabling them to access unencrypted personal information.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday, stated that last year's breach against the Defense Department’s Defense Manpower Data Center exposed dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive information for months, showing a “flagrant disregard for the privacy interests of servicemembers and other military-adjacent individuals.”
A current and a former Marine are the two plaintiffs. They aim to represent more than 3 million servicemembers and are seeking damages of more than $5 million.
