1M Impacted by CenterPoint Energy Data Breach

A data breach against CenterPoint Energy has impacted approximately 1 million Texans. This disclosure follows one month after the organization filed a notice with the SEC.
In the September filing, the organization stated it became aware of the incident after the alleged hackers claimed to have stolen a data set of customer information. Through investigation, it was determined that unauthorized users accessed customer data through an externally facing system. At this time, the company doesn’t see evidence of services or operations being disrupted.
Data compromised by this incident includes:
- Names
- Addresses
- Driver’s license numbers
- Social Security numbers
While the newest disclosure reveals the impact on Texan customers, CenterPoint Energy also provides natural gas and electric services to Indiana, Ohio and Minnesota. It is possible customers in those states may have been impacted as well.
