Nuclear Facility Cyberattack Investigated as Possible Iranian Exploit

Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research defended against a cyberattack. This attack targeted the organization’s IT infrastructure but was thwarted, according to a statement regarding the event, and the systems were not compromised. Professor Jakub Kupecki, Director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research, says the reactor is operating and at full capacity. Furthermore, production, operations and research efforts were not interrupted.
Krzysztof Gawkowski, the country’s digital minister, told the media the attack spanned “the past few days.” Additionally, he stated that early signs of the attack suggest it originated from Iran. This would fall in line with the expectation that Iran will target critical infrastructure entities as the Iranian conflict unfolds.
However, Gawkowski emphasizes that the hackers may be using these indicators to replicate Iran’s playbook and conceal their true origins, as Poland has been the subject of cyberattacks since the war in Ukraine began.
This incident is still under investigation. It follows shortly after a suspected Iranian cyberattack targeted a prominent U.S. medical technology company.
