After Email Hacking, University Targeted By Another Breach

After experiencing an email hacking incident on Oct. 31, the University of Pennsylvania has faced another cyberattack.
The new cybersecurity incident involves a breach to Oracle E-Business Suite servers containing personal data associated with individuals across several states whom are connected to the University. This breach was discovered in November. At this time, it is unclear how many individuals are affected; however, a notice filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General states that 1,488 Maine residents were impacted.
A consumer notice from the University states, “It is important to note that we have no evidence at this time that your information has been used for any purpose that could cause you any harm as a result of this incident.”
In the October email hacking incident, the alleged hackers claimed to have stolen data from approximately 1.2 million students, alumni and donors; however, the University asserts that this estimation is “mischaracterized” and “overstate[d].” Data allegedly stolen included names, birthdates, phone numbers, and more.
