Anthony Canale started his career in law enforcement, where he performed the roles of Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain before rising to Chief of Police at a South Jersey Police Department. There, he led full operations and directed a team of 75 law enforcement members and administrative workers.

“I remember as a young man wanting to emulate those who were caring, who had command presence about them, and those who ran towards issues instead of running away,” Canale says.

During his extensive 33-year law enforcement career, Canale served as the Head of Internal Affairs, Team Lead Crisis Negotiator, and Deputy Coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management. The majority of his career was spent as a criminal investigator and included 9.5 years assigned to the FBI Newark Division as part of an International Narcotics Task Force.

Reflecting on this time in his professional journey, Canale remarks, “I’m humbled and blessed to have a diverse and dynamic career in the service of others.”

During his career, Canale has been recognized for outstanding police work by the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Drug Enforcement session, currently holds a T/S U.S. clearance, and is certified in crisis management from the Northwestern Kellogg School. Among his accomplishments, Canale has also completed the ASIS Security Executive Development Program and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Upon retiring from law enforcement, a new career path was presented to him. In 2010, he joined the private sector as Director of Operations for CargoNet, a subsidiary of Verisk. In this role, Canale was challenged to design a system that reached across the supply chain to address the proliferation of cargo theft domestically and internationally.

Using years of experience in investigating organized crime matters, CargoNet, a subsidiary of Verisk, was built to help insurance companies, shippers, brokers, and manufacturers analyze several data points for theft and share visibility between the victims and law enforcement. Canale was part of a team that successfully built the company’s CargoNet product, working with law enforcement on a contributory database analyzing and tracking cargo theft and organized crime syndicates across North America.

“The greatest challenge in my career was the transition from public service to the private sector,” Canale remarks. “In the public sector, you're responsible to the taxpayers, and in the private sector your responsible to the board of directors and shareholders.”

In security, you have to have a desire to serve others and take responsibility in their safety and well-being.

Canale overcame the challenge. Soon after taking his role as a Director of Operations, he was promoted to General Manager of CargoNet, where he would balance a public-private partnership to help resolve the systematic failure information exchange communications.

In 2015, Canale was tapped to lead a crisis response team at Verisk. The team was tasked to respond to the aftermath of a major earthquake that had devastated a local office in Nepal.

The successful response brought into focus the need for a global security, crisis management & resilience position, which Canale has led since 2017.

Canale reflects on the value a background in law enforcement and emergency management has brought to his role.

“My background in law enforcement has afforded me the expertise in building and managing global security programs,” he says.

Canale soon rose to Vice President, Verisk Crime Analytics, where he forged strategic partnerships to bring industries together in collaborative relationships for the benefit of stakeholders. In this role, he headed an information sharing consortium to support future risk management efforts with behavioral data and actuarial data.

In 2017, Canale stepped into his current position as Vice President, Verisk Global Protection Services. In this role, he leads global security operations, including risk management and crisis response, for more than 11,000 clients in 68 countries.

“I would say the greatest accomplishment of my career has been assembling a group of talented, curious, smart, dedicated team members and having the responsibility to help them grow and succeed in their professional careers,” Canale says.

Canale believes security professionals must understand that security is more than just a job.

“In security, you have to have a desire to serve others and take responsibility in their safety and well-being,” he states.

For new security professionals, Canale offers the following advice: “Approach things with an open mind. Understand that people are inherently diverse in background, education, and culture,” he says. “Recognizing we all start and finish in different places, be curious, ask questions, immerse yourself in others' cultures, and most importantly, do the right thing even when no one's watching.”
