The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) created a guideline to help mail officials adhere to safe mail handling procedures. The publication, Election Mail Handling Procedures to Protect Against Hazardous Materials, discusses how election officials can safely manage mail, recognize suspicious mail, and respond to potential hazards. 

Mail is a vital part of organization operations across the country as well as mail balloting. In the past twenty years, government officials and mail workers have been the targets of threat incidents such as the mailing of hazardous materials. Securing the mailing process keeps mail officials safe and allows businesses and elections to run as usual.  

Furthermore, the procedures detailed in this publication provide instructions for how election officials and postal workers can follow protocol to ensure their safety and to defend the integrity of the election, maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.
