In response to the ongoing cybersecurity threat to pipeline systems, DHS’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the issuance of a second Security Directive that requires owners and operators of TSA-designated critical pipelines that transport hazardous liquids and natural gas to implement a number of urgently needed protections against cyber intrusions. 

There are millions of miles of oil and gas pipelines that are critical to the world economy. A lot depends on the safe and environmentally sound operation of networks of pipelines spanning long distances through remote areas and varied terrain.

DHS reports that critical infrastructure faced 198 incidents of cyber attack in FY 2012, ranging from malware to phishing attempts.
