The Better Mouse Trap: Continuous Learning through Incident Analysis

To effectively secure organizations and facilities, policies, plans and procedures have to be fluid to address the ever-changing trends of crime, terrorism and active shooter incidents. When organizations engage professionals in the security sector to help them address threats of physical, intellectual or cyber theft, violence and, in worst case scenarios, active shooter incidents; it is imperative that security professionals are learning from the nuances of emerging trends and are giving tailored, scalable advice to their clientele.

This session will look at several incidents which demonstrate security risk in the education, public facilities/venues and healthcare sectors and will discuss what can be learned from rapidly changing tactics. This session will be aimed at reviewing best practices in preventing incidents and describe the invaluable importance of stressing plans and policies to make technologies and tools more effective.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Assess the differences and mitigating factors exhibited in the response and preventive measures shown in recent active shooter incidents.
  2. Identify the types of threat assessment and related security measures deployed in different sectors in response to increased coverage of attacks.
  3. Define the 90/10 rule and demonstrate the balancing act in making policy recommendations vs. identifying technologies for security improvements.
  4. Determine the difference between a security consultant and a corporate security designee.
