Safe Separations – Addressing the Security Risks Associated with Reduction-In-Force and Corporate Downsizing Activities
Set against the backdrop of the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2014 collapse of the global oil market, “Safe Separations” explores the nexus between market driven reduction in force (RIF) and expansion in force (EIF) exercises and the risk of violence impacting an organization. The phenomena of significant headcount change brings unique challenges to companies which are typically exposed to violence risk from 3rd party perpetrators but are now facing the risk of violent actions being taken by employees and contractors from within the organization. The presentation explores the stressors employees are exposed to in adverse market conditions and how these can compound to create potentially lethal situations in the workplace and cause unacceptable levels of exposure for the company. The session includes discussion on the effectiveness of contemporary western threat management practices when addressing violence threat cases in different cultural environs applicable to multinational organizations.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the relationship between market dynamics and corporate decisions to reduce headcount and/or footprint.
- Understand the security risks posed by reduction-in-force exercises.
- Identify “pathway to violence” and how multi-disciplinary assessment of behaviors of concern can lead to successful pre-incident intervention.
- Review the impact of employment termination on employees and how this can manifest as a security risk.
