Tom Johansmeyer

Tom Johansmeyer runs PCS, a Verisk business. Under his leadership, PCS has expanded into new regions and classes of business, reporting on industrywide insured losses on natural and manmade catastrophe events and large risk losses. Johansmeyer has developed specialties in political violence, cyber risk, and environmental/social/governance issues. Before PCS, he held re/insurance industry roles at Guy Carpenter and Deloitte. He’s an avid cyclist and open water swimmer, former soldier, bike commuter, and committed coffee-drinker.

The social and economic impacts of political violence don’t often match. Terror attacks can accomplish their main objective of striking fear into a local population while not significantly interfering with commerce, and broad waves of unrest have the potential for supply chain disruption, local business closures lasting for days, and repair and remediation that can become quite costly. There’s a third category that doesn’t get enough attention in policy and academic circles: insurance industry losses.
