Wade Lance is Field CTO at Illusive Networks. Lance has been productizing new technologies in education, healthcare and information security for over 20 years. He has diverse experience in solution design for global 1000 cybersecurity teams, an extensive background in advanced cyberattack detection, and a specialty in cyber deception methods and platforms. Prior to his career in information technology, Lance was a professional mountain guide. As Program Director at Appalachian Mountaineering he developed a new method for technical rock and ice climbing instruction that is still used today to teach advanced skills for the most dangerous environments.

Honeypots were the first form of deception technology. IT security researchers started using them in the 1990s, with the intent to deceive malicious actors who had made it onto the network into interacting with a false system. In this way, honeypots could gather and assess the behavior of the malicious actors. They were not created for threat detection. However, things have changed a great deal in the years since honeypots were created – including deception technology.
