John Sherman, longtime U.S. intelligence official and former Acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Department of Defense (DoD), has been appointed as the new DoD CIO.

According to the Pentagon, Sherman's duties will include advising the Secretary of Defense for Information Management/Information Technology (IT) and Information Assurance and developing and maintaining non-intelligence space systems; satellite communications, navigation and timing programs; spectrum; and telecommunications issues.

Before assuming his DoD role, Sherman held various positions in the intelligence community, including Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Open Source Enterprise and Intelligence Community CIO. He has been awarded multiple national and international awards for his security accomplishments.
