Airport Security Challenges in the Midst of the DHS Shutdown

As the DHS shutdown continues, challenges have emerged for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
While the funding bill remains stalled in Congress, TSA workers must work without pay. Due to this, CNBC reports a TSA staffing shortage that has caused “shockingly long lines” at airports across the nation, particularly in the airports serving the following locations:
- Houston
- New Orleans
- Atlanta
In the case of the New Orleans Airport, a post on the airport’s social media account warned travelers of “longer-than-average lines” and encouraged them to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours early.
“The Airport has staff on hand to help keep the lines organized, and we will continue to coordinate with our federal partners with the TSA as they navigate this issue,” the airport said in the post on X.
Travel patterns are predicted to increase as many schools across the nation go on break for the Spring.
Airlines for America, a trade association and lobbying group for the industry, released a statement in regards to the shutdown and resulting staffing shortages.
“Airlines have done their part to prepare; now Congress and the administration must act with urgency to reach a deal that reopens DHS and ends this shutdown,” said Chris Sununu, Chief Executive of Airlines for America. “America’s transportation security workforce is too important to be used as political leverage.”
