It’s Now Intelligent Video Motion Detection

July 18, 2007

IVMD 2.0 uses advanced video content analysis (VCA) to reliably detect moving objects while suppressing false alarms. Its algorithm intelligently adapts to changing lighting and environmental conditions such as rain, snow and leaves blowing in the wind. The improved algorithm can detect and track objects under difficult conditions. IVMD 2.0 offers an embedded intelligent video analysis capability that runs directly on selected Bosch video encoders and IP cameras. This allows VCA to be pushed to the edge of the system, eliminating the need for costly servers, frame grabber cards and video management software — making Bosch IVMD 2.0 a very cost-effective solution.
The new functionality built into IVMD 2.0 will allow cameras and encoders to detect idle and removed objects as well as objects that remain within an area for a specific time, which is commonly called loitering. The system is an ideal solution for high security applications at industrial plants, airports, government buildings, military areas, correctional facilities, museums and warehouses — essentially any area that would benefit from automated surveillance. IVMD 2.0 can easily be configured to detect only the important moving objects in a scene: users can select the required sensitive areas of an image, minimum object size and motion direction that will trigger alarms.

The size, speed and direction filters from IVMD 1.0 have been enhanced by an aspect ratio filter that helps distinguish object types based on their shape characteristics. The filters can be used in any combination to precisely determine the object features that the user is searching for. Up to 16 detector fields – each with its own parameters – can be placed over the scene in complex patterns, even overlapping.

This allows users to detect multiple object states in parallel, generating separate triggers that can be handled independently or in combinations. Once movement has been detected, the object is outlined in yellow on the display and motion is tracked on the monitor. If an object and its motion characteristics match the conditions defined for one of the detector fields, it creates an alarm and its outlines are switched to red. IVMD 2.0 tracks objects based on trajectories — tracking lines that can also be displayed within the video. Image stabilization for pole-mount cameras removes “jitter” and enables IVMD to track objects more reliably. An alarm can be signaled by a standard relay output on the IP encoder or camera, or it can create an alarm connection to stream video to a receiver.

Alarms can also be transmitted to a video management system, such as Bosch VIDOS or DiBos systems, to start extended alarm scenarios. In addition to creating alarms, IVMD 2.0 produces metadata, a description of how the algorithm interprets the analyzed scene. The metadata is sent over the network and may also be recorded with the video stream. It can be used for live viewing and for providing smart search capability on recordings. IVMD 2.0 has embedded Video Content Analysis (VCA), which means less bandwidth and storage usage, less human interference, lower operating expenses and better alarm management. This automation of intelligence at the edge leads to fewer errors and more reliable handling of events, ultimately resulting in improved security.
