The White House eliminated the position of cybersecurity coordinator on the National Security Council this week. The post was central to developing policy to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks and the use of offensive cyber weapons.
The new strategy is “aimed at ensuring the availability of critical national functions” and “fostering efficiency, innovation, trustworthy communication, and economic prosperity in ways consistent with our national values and that protect privacy and civil liberties.”
Masharn Franklin was in charge of garnishing money from the paychecks of city employees, and the government says she embezzled money by issuing checks in the names of her relatives.
The Met’s system produced 104 alerts, of which only two were later confirmed to be positive matches. The force says it does not consider the inaccurate matches “false positives” because alerts were checked a second time after they occurred.

In San Francisco, the Union Square Business Improvement District launched an outdoor security camera program in 2012, starting with six privately-owned cameras, and it has since raised more than $3 million in grant money and outfitted 40 property owners with cameras, extending the network to around 350 cameras that share footage with police.
Police will soon be able to access surveillance cameras with views from around Springfield, Mass., including the new MGM Springfield casino, Union Station and city schools. Analysts at the Springfield Police Department’s Real-Time Analysis center will be able to use information gleaned from those cameras to provide situational awareness and information to officers in the field.
What can police agencies do to lower their own rates of violent crime? There is no one single answer, because a wide variety of strategies and tools are required to combat violent crimes – but one of the most important practices is a policy of comprehensive collection and analysis of ballistic evidence during investigations of crime scenes where shots were fired.
