California school district defunds police; will rely on de-escalation training

After a four-year campaign from community activists, the Pomona Unified School District announced that it would end on-campus police presence and patrols. Instead of police presence, the school district will train others in de-escalation methods to deal with violence or incidents that need response.
The California school district has previously contracted with the local police department to have police officer presence on campus at its high schools. The Pomona Unified School District serves around 30,000 students across more than 40 schools.
It is located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, and one of the largest school districts in Los Angeles County.
