France Raises Security Alert After Attacks
France has raised its security alert to the highest level for three days today after a series of attacks, including one in the southeastern region of France where a suspect attacked an American gas factory. Two people were wounded in the attack, and a local businessman was found decapitated at the factory site, along with banners carrying Arabic inscriptions, The Associated Press reports.
Also today, gunmen in Tunisia stormed two hotels in a popular tourist area, killing at least 37 people. In Kuwait, at least 15 people were killed in a blast in a mosque, and the Islamic State has claimed responsibility.
France’s President François Hollande spoke to Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi after the attacks, and they both vowed to step up coordination, The Wall Street Journal reports.
A statement from the office of the French President says: “The two presidents have expressed their solidarity in the face of terrorism and their intention to pursue and intensify their cooperation in the fight against this plague.”
In the attack on the French factory, officials are stating that the suspect drove his vehicle through the factory gates and slammed into gas canisters, causing the explosion that injured two people. The suspect is in custody, French police report.
