FBI Reports Fewer Bank Robberies in 2011
In the first quarter of the year, 1,092 violations of the Federal Bank Robbery and Incidental Crimes Statute have been reported, according to statistics released by the FBI.
The number is a decrease from the 1,183 reported violations in the first quarter of 2010. From Jan. 1 to March 31, the FBI recorded 1,081 robberies, nine burglaries, two larcenies and one extortion of a financial institution.
Richmond County investigators have responded to two bank robberies in 2011. Arrests were made in the Jan. 19 robbery of Regions Bank, 2507 Peach Orchard Road, and the Jan. 20 robbery of SunTrust Bank, 2901 Washington Road.
The majority of the country's robberies occurred in the Western region, the report said. Demand notes were also the most commonly recorded modus operandi.
Authorities recovered 20 percent of the more than $7.5 million in loot that was taken in 88 percent of cases.
The incidents resulted in 24 injuries, three deaths and 18 hostages.
The release states that the most common day for bank crimes is Friday, and the most common time is between 9 and 11 a.m.
