Former CIA Analyst Unlawfully Transmits National Defense Data, Sentenced to Prison

On June 11, 2025, a former CIA analyst was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for “unlawfully retaining and transmitting Top Secret National Defense Information to people who were not entitled to receive it.” The former CIA analyst was Asif William Rahman of Vienna.
In October of 2024, Rahman obtained and printed two Top Secret documents that contained National Defense Information about a United States foreign ally as well as its planned actions against a foreign adversary. Rahman took these documents, photographed them, and transmitted them to individuals who were not entitled to access them. One day after Rahman did this, the documents appeared on social media platforms with their classifications markings.
Rahman continued to access, print and transmit classified information through November and was indicted by a grand jury on November 7, 2024. On January 17, 2025, Rahman pled guilty to “two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information related to the national defense.”
Rahman has remained in custody since the arrest.
