Top challenge for 57% of end users is outdated physical security or IT

The 2025 State of Physical Security Report from Genetec details shifts in the physical security industry, especially in regard to priorities and challenges. According to the report, 77% of end users have physical security departments and IT departments that work collaboratively; yet, 57% cite outdated physical security and/or IT infrastructure as their organization’s greatest challenge. Furthermore, 65% of channel partners report clients want to see benefits from new technology and abilities.
The report also delved into reasons behind delayed projects. In 2023, 45% of end users delayed projects, with supply chain issues being the main cause cited. This percentage rose to 49% in 2024. The main cause of delays in 2024 was economic uncertainties or inflation, at 54%. This is followed by recruitment difficulties at 44%, political uncertainties at 39% and upskilling challenges at 36%.
As for top processes and capabilities of the year, the report found 66% of end users placed access control (50%) and/or video surveillance (39%) at the top. Consequently, 81% of channel partners’ work involved either core system.
Other trends discussed in the report include:
- 49% of end users reported entirely on-premises physical security deployments (no cloud involved)
- 76% of channel partners say the hardest role to fill is Installation Technician
- 38% of consultants plan to expand coverage into cybersecurity
