Maryland’s Wicomico County Public Schools Expand District-Wide Video Management System

The Wicomico County School District is unifying teaching and technology in the construction of the new James M. Bennett High School facility in Salisbury, Md. A networked video management system from Vicon is among the attributes the building will incorporate. A video surveillance system will be installed by Baltimore Sound Engineering, Inc., a communication technology integrator, with cameras that can transmit video to six of Vicon’s Kollector series digital video recorders.

The proposed system is the latest installation in a district-wide deployment of the ViconNet IP video management platform throughout Wicomico County Public Schools. Twenty-five facilities throughout the district are currently utilizing Vicon’s Roughneck and SurveyorVFT cameras, as well as Kollector Pro and Kollector Elite digital video recorders to protect students and faculty. ViconNet viewing software allows live and recorded video to be monitored at each school by both the principal and the security officers. Video from all locations can be accessed remotely from the system nucleus, which resides at the Board of Education building in the same town.

Since the first installation of ViconNet at North Salisbury Elementary School in 2005, the schools have continually added equipment and performed software upgrades as often as their budget would allow. The district has recently volunteered North Salisbury Elementary to serve as a beta site for testing Vicon’s latest line of hybrid DVRs, the Kollector Strike series. Installation at James M. Bennett High School is expected to be completed this summer.
