Security leaders should consider the safety of their employees and visitors not only when inside a building, but everywhere on company property. This includes parking lots and garages, regardless of their distance from a building itself. For example, a stadium is responsible for parking garages it owns even if that garage is a mile away from the stadium. If a stadium owns the spaces between, such as a designated path or bridge, then security leaders must prepare for any emergency that could happen in those areas.
The reality is that parking lots and parking garages come with their own unique set of security challenges. Because parking structures are often quite large, void of many people and usually located far away from a physical building, it’s more challenging to ensure the safety of users. In a large parking garage, the ability to find help in the event of an emergency can also prove very difficult.
