Approximately 70 additional video surveillance cameras will be installed throughout New Orleans to aid police in investigations, catching violent offenders and illegal dumpers, according to the New Orleans City Council.

The cameras will add to New Orleans already robust network of $40 million 24/7 cameras deployed in 2017. The cameras have helped police solve carjackings, homicides and other violent crimes, as well as aid the Sanitation Department in catching illegal dumpers.

The move comes amid reports of an increase in violent crime in the city. According to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, the city of New Orleans has seen a rise in homicides of 70% and more than 150% in carjackings in 2020 alone.
