Lloyd’s List reported that tankers calling at U.S. ports must have a contract with certified salvage and firefighting response providers capable of deploying swiftly in U.S. waters after spills. The news service out of Britain speculated that the requirement will impact non-tanker vessels soon. It is expected that some tanker owners will be unable to meet the financial needs of the rule while – on the other hand – boost the ranks of salvage and firefighting response providers. The Coast Guard also patrols marina and port areas for suspicious activity.
