The University of Maryland will be charging its own students to fund its federally mandated Title IX office that investigates reports of sexual assault on campus.

The university’s Student Government Association approved a $34 mandatory annual fee at a Sept. 28 meeting in order provide additional funding to the staff fielding a growing number of reports each year, Buzzfeed News reported. The vote on the measure is pending and, if passed, would take effect next year.

The university’s Title IX office was created two years ago and it couldn't shoulder the financial burden after its budget skyrocketed from $643,000 to over $1 million in just one year, Buzzfeed reported.

The university said they are "supportive" of the student-funded measure.

In the 2014-2015 school year 112 cases of sexual misconduct were reported  on a campus of 38,140 students, according to the school’s statistics.
