Lighting the Way -- It’s the Image that Counts with IP Video

One of the most important aspects that can make or break the success of IP video system is the quality of images produced. While the right camera selection is important, the right amount of light at a scene can dramatically improve clarity of images and the efficiency of your system.

Earlier this week, Security Magazine Editor Emeritus Bill Zalud moderated a well-attended Webinar on Lighting the Way to High Quality IP Video with expert presenter Dr. Bob Banerjee of Bosch.

The presentation included interactive polling of Webinar attendees, who learned how:

  • Active infrared technology optimizes video quality for effective 24/7 surveillance.
  • Appropriate lighting lowers bandwidth consumption when transmitting video across your network.
  • Crisp images allow for greater compression of video, helping to reduce storage costs for your system.

One polling question asked:

Are you seeing any demand for solutions that are sympathetic to the environment, e.g. low power, low light pollution, low noise?

Answers:

Yes – 60%

No 40%

About the poll result, Dr. Banerjee commented, “There's a lot of talk about the environment and eco-friendly technology and solutions. Many organizations are under pressure to respond. How real is this pressure and is it affecting buying behavior? Sixty percent of poll respondents already see explicit demand for such environmentally-sensitive solutions. There are many ways to achieve this, and one simple way is to use low power LED lighting instead of incandescent light in video surveillance systems to reduce power consumption. Using infrared instead of visible light also avoids light pollution.
