In the aftermath of the fatal bombing at last April’s Boston Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has tightened security measures in several areas for the Oct. 13 race.

*Individuals (both runners and spectators) will go through a bag screening at checkpoints off Michigan Avenue before entering Grant Park.

*General, non-ticketed spectators will not be able to access Grant Park until 9 a.m. (90 minutes after the official start) and are “strongly discouraged” from bringing bags into Grant Park.

*Runners leaving gear at the race’s gear check tents must put it in a clear plastic bag issued by the marathon.

*Runners must pick up their own participant packets before the race. The marathon will no longer allow anyone to pick up a packet on behalf of someone else, said the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago Marathon spokesman Jeremy Borling said the new measures were developed in conjunction with the city’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications.  He said the city already had implemented some of the new security at Lollapalooza and the Blackhawks’ victory parade.

Borling said marathon officials would not comment on the link between the heightened security and the Boston Marathon bombing, said the Tribune.
