While construction companies and builders sometimes use security video to cut down on site theft and vandalism, a trend has emerged in which these firms implement video surveillance to diminish harm from workmen's compensation claims, bystander accidents and other lawsuits. For example, Centex-Rooney Construction Co. has video going at its Miami Waterford Corporate Park, a $110 million corporate project of a dozen office buildings and a parking garage. Adding to the high-tech design of the Centex-Rooney security video system: owners of the office park in New York City can view the Florida site from the convenience of their desks. Developers also see value in the on-site camera systems by being assured that construction is on-time or as evidence of building problems.
