MoreMobility is the keyword with today’s police, who are fast embracing technology ranging from security video to iPhones. In Desert Hot Springs, Calif., police unveiled a public camera surveillance program this week with emphasis on its mobile, high-speed data network. The $1.2 million system includes 30 cameras in public places and in 16 squad cars. Dispatchers and officers can monitor the cameras from not only police station desktops, but also laptops over a secure outdoor wireless network. In the squad cars, officers use a touch screen to zoom around panoramic video of any of the sites, including the dash cameras of other officers.
In Florida’s Levy County, the Sheriff’s Office, along with other area law enforcement agencies, can report crime information via a free iPhone application that includes local crime mapping and national sex-offender data for areas throughout the country. It’s called CrimeReports iPhone available at the iTunes App Store.
