Coast Guard OKs Liquefied Natural Gas Tanker from Yemen into Boston Harbor

February 08, 2010

No doubt. It has been a controversial decision and a long one in the making. Later this month, it is expected that a tanker from Yemen will move through the Port of Boston Harbor, thanks in part to approval of the U.S. Coast Guard, which says it has developed a security plan to allow the safe passage of tankers carrying LNG. The Coast Guard will be making future decisions on a case-by-case basis. It will be only the second shipment from Yemen to the U.S. The first was delivered to Sabine, Texas, last week. The Boston decision took almost one year to make. And the city’s mayor is still opposed to the approval. Shipments come to the United States from a plant operated by French energy firm GDF Suez. While Yemen’s ports meet international security standards, American authorities say additional security is necessary.

Yemen and terrorism seem to be psychologically linked after the Christmas Day attempted airline bombing over Detroit.
