Outdoor Security Video Gains in Popularity But Can Be Tricky

August 27, 2010

For perimeter monitoring, outdoor video surveillance provides information not available with other technologies. There is greater use outdoors, thanks in part to the growing application of megapixel cameras.

But there is a basic outdoor challenge – most cameras that make outdoor surveillance possible are primarily designed for indoor use. The typical solution for outdoor use is to put the camera in a weather-resistant enclosure; but this does not begin to solve all the problems.

Bad illumination, shadows, rain and snow, temperature extremes, strong winds, large areas to cover, limited network connectivity and potential network vulnerability all can beat down effectiveness outside.

Security Magazine’s archive on the Web has solid content on outdoor security video – use the search phrase outdoor camera. And an outdoor picture story on extreme installations has just been released by Axis Communications.
