License Security Methods Will Cost Oregon $16 Million

Oregon faces millions of dollars in costs to improve the security of driver’s licenses, or the federal government could eventually refuse to recognize Oregon IDs for things such as boarding planes, The Associated Press reports.

Officials have reported the cost at more than $16 million over the next six years.

The REAL ID Act that Congress passed in 2005 requires each state to add 39 elements to its procedures for issuing IDs, such as saving images of birth certificates and verifying a person’s Social Security number at license renewal time.

According to AP, Oregon only meets 28 of those standards, and the compliance deadline has passed. A new deadline may be coming this winter with a grace period for people from states that don’t comply
