The City of Birmingham, Alabama has implemented multiple security measures to ensure the safety of The World Games 2022, which take place in the city from July 7 to July 17, 2022. The World Games are an international competition that occur every four years, with the 11th annual event in Birmingham.

The athletic event draws competitors and spectators from around the world, featuring competitions from breakdancing to drone racing. To control crowds and protect event facilities, the City of Birmingham focused on perimeter security measures ahead of and during The World Games.

The city consulted with federal law enforcement and the World Games Birmingham Organizing Committee to designate a secure perimeter around the event space, including restricting road and rail access to the stadium. Other security measures implemented during The World Games include controlling delivery access; stopping construction within the secure perimeter during the event; designating safe drop-off and pickup locations for visitors to the Games; and restricting bag types and hazardous materials around the event location.

“Our commitment is to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brings people together for a fun, inspiring and safe event,” Mayor Randall L. Woodfin said in a statement. “The city has consulted federal, state and local partners as well as other high-level international events to ensure the best experience possible for our athletes, visitors, residents and businesses.”
