Part of Homeland Security’s Secure Border Initiative – what’s called a “virtual border fence” – is under construction again. At a cost of $100 million over five years, the fence is now under construction to cover 23 miles of the border southwest of Tucson. It includes 17 unmanned sensor and communication towers, radar, day/night cameras and 200 unattended ground sensors. The plan by integrator Boeing calls for covering the entire U.S. Mexico land border and will let remote operators direct on-the-ground agents to specific locations. A prototype had communications and fuzzy image problems. Already existing is DIY version -- a The Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition joined BlueServo in a public-private partnership to deploy a Virtual Community Watch, which lets any Web user to view real-time surveillance images.
