Holistic Approach to Security Helping Hospitals Improve Care

November 15, 2013

connecticutchildrenConnecticut Children’s Medical Center is that state’s only hospital dedicated to caring exclusively for children. The 187-bed not-for-profit facility also serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Connecticut Children’s believes family-centered care is essential to ensuring children resume living their lives to the greatest potential. When a child is in their care, they strive to keep families fully informed, directly involved and as close to the child as possible.

The medical center issues badges to 2,200 visitors a day, as well as 50 to 100 vendors, using HID Global’s EasyLobby® Secure Visitor Management Software. The system enables Connecticut Children’s to intake visitors with a quick scan of a driver’s license, business card or other common form of ID. In addition, the software integrates with the hospital’s existing peripheral barcode scanners and digital cameras.

Connecticut Children’s deploys the system at every entrance point. Once checked in, a badge is issued identifying each visitor, and the inpatient and location to be visited. Barcoding facilitates easy checkout after visits.

A touch-screen kiosk conveniently enables self-check-in for visitors with a driver’s license. Hospital staff may also pre-register visitors through the center’s intranet. The solution also quickly accommodates temporary badges for employees who have lost or forgotten their cards.

For children on extended stays, multi-day passes allow family members to check in and out with a simple barcode scan, either at a badging station or with a mobile scanner.

A watch list automatically flags unwanted visitors, triggering email alerts to appropriate persons. Database records aid internal investigations and assist law enforcement, to assess and prevent negative incidents.

Expansion plans for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center include multiple buildings and sites. Their visitor registration system will expand as well, including greater use of mobile solutions and the enablement of access across satellite and remote facilities.
